Adult Overweight & Obesity Definition

Overweight or obesity is defined as weight that is higher than what is deemed healthy for a certain height. A screening technique for overweight and obesity is the body mass index (BMI).

BMI is calculated by dividing a person's height in meters squared by their weight in kilograms. High body fatness may be indicated by a high BMI.

  1. Your BMI is considered underweight if it is less than 18.5.
  2. Your BMI is between 18.5 and 25, which is considered a healthy weight level.
  3. Your BMI is considered overweight if it is between 25.0 and 30.
  4. Your BMI is considered obese if it is 30.0 or greater.

Frequently, categories are used to categorize obesity:
  1. Class 1: BMI between 30 and 35
  2. Class 2: BMI between 35 and 40
  3. BMI class 3: 40 or greater. Severe obesity is sometimes defined as class 3 obesity.
